India: Shelter and education for street girls

Net4kids helps vulnerable girls off the street and offers them shelter and education. In the Rainbow Homes, these girls can be children again. An Irish nun, Sister Cyril, has set up the first Rainbow Homes in Calcutta. She was given a number of private schools, which have been adapted so that a number of girls can also sleep in the evenings.

The structural approach takes girls off the streets in India.

During the day, the former street girls from different social, financial and religious backgrounds attend classes, which is unique given the caste system in India. The organization now has 29 homes, and the government has also built homes based on their model. The local organization Rainbow Foundation India (RFI) is responsible for all Rainbow Homes in India and for further developing and scaling up the programs.

The guidance and support of the girls is aimed at providing safety, reintegration into society and independence. In addition to education and medical care, empowerment plays an important role in the concept. Girls are made aware of their own talents and strength and are encouraged to use them in dealing with others and their environment. With the aim of building their own independent future, so that they can take care of themselves and their own family.

Why this project partner

The Rainbow Homes program is one of the start-up projects of Net4kids. By using existing infrastructures, the schools, a large reach is immediately achieved and a real impact is made. A structural change in the approach to the problem of street children. Create a whole movement and not just save a few girls. The program is embedded in its own country and now consists of more than 50% from local funding. The difference is made at a strategic level. The organization has started with the care of small children and is growing 'with the children'. By offering living arrangements for older girls, the midway homes, by setting up the Rainbow Academy where teachers are trained.

How your company can contribute to this project

Roamler is a striking example of a company that not only drives the growth of the company from its purpose and core business, but at the same time also makes a difference in the lives of these street girls, who otherwise would hardly have any opportunities. A crowdsourcing company that gives professionals ('Roamlers') the opportunity to use their skills whenever and wherever it suits them. To help as many (former) street girls as possible on their way to an independent and independent existence, Roamler annually donates 1% of its earnings as a company to this project. In short, the more Roamlers get to work, the more girls off the street!
